How to Be a Present and Mindful Thinker

You may often find that your mind is cluttered with the thoughts of day-to-day life. You scramble to get ready in the morning in order to reach your destination on time, only to remember you definitely left the tea pot on. Perhaps you are someone who spends a fair amount of time reminiscing, or reliving, over past events constantly; wishing that things could go back to how they were. If this resonates with you on any level, then you my friend need to look into being a present thinker.

Some would refer to present thinking as being mindful, which is entirely correct. Of course while it’s easy to just talk about living in the present moment, one first has to practice. Being able to keep your mind focused and mindful is a skill that some spend their whole lifetime trying to master, so no rush. You have to remember that your mind is a muscle, which means you have to work it out consistently. Meditating is an excellent exercise for the brain and practicing mindfulness. You could start off taking 15 minutes a day to sit in silence and clear your head. While it’s nearly impossible for most to just stop thinking on command, meditating is about clearing away the clutter. It’s not about eliminating the sea but simply calming it. Imagine you are a small boat, floating in the ocean of your mind; with all the thoughts and concern of the past and the future you start to notice vicious waves on the horizon. The sky begins to grey with worry and your sailboat is being tossed about in tumultuous waters. Now imagine your mind when centered and mindful. You are resting on your sailboat under clear, blue skies. While you may notice a storm brewing over in the distance, you simply steer clear of it. You must take notice of your emotions and the concerns you may have, but you can’t let them dictate your life. You must remember that here in the present those troubles have not come or have already passed, to keep worrying about them is to give them more power than they actually have.

Being more mindful, a present thinker, a frequent meditator also has a lot of benefits. Please take notice of the list below.

  1. You will be more understanding of yourself and your personality. Taking those moments of silence to just listen to your inner voice will help you to get acquainted with the true you. The you that may not get to shine through the darkness of tomorrows worries.
  2. How does an ant eat an elephant? One bite at a time! Being a present thinker will make it easier to deal with your problems one bite at a time. You can take apart the issue piece by piece and clearly decipher an answer.
  3. Life can become more enjoyable! Some of that magic will return to your life; you’ll find yourself listening to the birds or watching the sunset more often as you start living in the moment. You start to enjoy the momentary moments in the day.
  4. A loss of interest in empty entertainment. You’ll find you enjoy sitting listening to music, or calming your thoughts more than adding to the mind clutter with empty, and pointless entertainment. You will start to realize that those forms of recreation just add to your worry and possible insecurities; feeding your Ego and not your Soul.
  5. You’ll become more empathetic. When you are operating with mindfulness and a clear mind, you can begin to red the energies of a room. You’ll start to since the auras and emotion around you, which will allow you to move more smoothly through certain situations. When you so wrapped up in your own thoughts, it’s hard to see someone else’s point of view (really because there is just no extra space in your noggin!) Being present is excellent for removing yourself from difficult situations and analyzing them from a neutral point of view.
  6. Taking time to meditate will help to create a healthy form of self-love. Think of taking time to meditate as a self-love ritual. You may put on comfortable clothes, light some candles and incense, and maybe even play some light meditation music in the background. You are taking yourself out on a little mental date! Maybe sage the room before hand and plan to do some yoga afterwards to seal your practice.

While this society will push self-centered, fast living on you ate very chance it gets, you must realize that life was meant to be enjoyed one day at a time. From having grown up thinking that my entire life hinged on my SAT scores and what college will accept me, I now see that I missed out on a lot of good moments. Like a strange fog has fallen over the memories in my brain. If we all take the time to center ourselves, and live consciously, then as a race we can start to grow and prosper.

Remember to love yourself, love your enemies, and love the Universe.

Only with Love and Truth,

Zoë
